Luxmore Hut makes an excellent place to rest and enjoy the views before making your way back down. Beware of the cheeky kea though – these native parrot’s are known for stealing lunch from unsuspecting hikers! This is a consistent steep climb until the top, for those who want something more achievable. There are also alternative sections of the Kepler available, such as Brod bay to the Control Gates and Rainbow Reach to Control gates. Beyond hiking, take a scenic trip into Doubtful Sound (additional cost). Whichever option you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the incredible scenery Fiordland has to offer.

Accommodation

We offer a range of 3 star accommodation with great reviews throughout your journey. With each location chosen to give us the best access to each activity of the day. We’ll get active during the day followed by a great night sleep before we do it all again the next day. Where possible, we offer twin share and double accommodation with upgrades available in most locations (subject to availability).

There is no hurry today, as it couples as a flexible day to ensure we make the most of our hikes in Mt Cook National Park and Fiordland National Park. The journey is fantastic in it’s own right and the glowworm caves are unbelievable, but if we need to slow down or hurry up to get around the changing weather, we’ll mix up this day. For dinner, we’ll be having barbecued fresh, local venison from the home of the thriving industry – ask your guides for an entertaining history of Deer Farming in New Zealand.

Meals

The Canterbury, Southland and Otago regions of this journey are home to some of the most productive lands in New Zealand with a wide variety of export quality produce grown right here. Canterbury delivers high country sheep stations and fresh salmon from the alpine lakes. Southland provides us with superb beef farms and unique deer farms with a wild history. And Otago is know as the fruit bowl of the south with its plentiful stone and pip fruit orchards among the spectacular Central Otago vineyards. We’ll sample some of the best quality produce straight from the land to your fork as we travel through the regions.

Alpine weather is often fickle, so we’ll leave early to Mt Cook Village to check the weather and give ourselves the best chance possible of making the view point for lunch. This track requires a good level of fitness. If it is beyond your individual capabilities, 1 guide can take you to the closely matched but less intense alternative to the Tasman Glacier and Lake. Or, for an additional cost, take a scenic flight around Mt Cook or a boat trip onto the Tasman Glacier Lake. Tonight, as we rest our sorry legs, enjoy a feast of locally sourced, grass fed lamb.

Flexibility

Throughout our years of guiding, we know better than most, the value of flexibility. So, we made sure to allow the best chances of success to make your New Zealand journey the way you dreamed of it. If you want to add-on or subtract adventures, we’ll try to make them work. If your legs, or the weather acts-up, we have an impressive alternative activity list to keep you entertained. We always travel with Plan A in mind however we are acutely aware of the variables that make travelling so memorable. Travelling in late spring through summer and to early autumn is recommended when the daylight hours are longer and weather is warm and reliable.
